Moore Sees Van Zandt County As “Walking Capital Of The Galaxy”

He says he walks an average of 25 miles a week, and says just about
everybody needs to walk more than they do. He’s put the pencil to how much
walking goes on in the Canton area every year. “A million and a half people
visit First Monday every year in Canton,” he said. “And they walk more than
anybody.” He figures, “If each of them walked a minimum of one and one a
half miles, there would be five billion, 400 million steps walked each year in
Canton,” he said.

The magazine for ALL walkers!
He wants to see walking clubs already in existence get involved in walking events
in Canton and Van Zandt County, and more walking organizations formed.

He says walking events could be sponsored by such organizations as the American
Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and Trekkers of America, etc. Even shoe
companies could sponsor such events.

In addition to events in Canton, Moore visualizes walking events in Grand Saline, Edom, Wills Point, Van and
other towns in the county. He said walking-shopping events could be organized, where people count how many
steps they take when they shop, with prizes awarded to those who take the most steps.

“Van Zandt County could quickly become known as a walking capital,” he said. “There has never been a better
time to capitalize on this new interest in walking.”

Moore has a motto, “Knowing the steps you walk today will insure the prospects of a more healthy tomorrow.”

Moore was recently featured in Walk! Magazine, a publication out of Columbus, Ohio. The spring issue of that
publication says, “Bob, 73, is from Canton, Texas. He began counting steps in April 2004 and finds it to be a
good way to lose weight. He started at 245 pounds and has lost about 25 pounds by walking. He wants to lose
more.”

Still quoting from the magazine:
“I would like to get down to around 200 pounds,” he says. In addition, he hopes to walk an average of 10,000
steps a day and to complete in the Autumn Stroll 4-mile walk this fall.

Moore has numerous items to encourage people to walk. He has pedometers, walking hats, walking sticks and
even walking socks, among other items. He can be contacted on the web at Walkinstep.com.

When Flint tops a list in a national publication, it usually sends city officials and supporters into a defensive
posture.

There was the famous 1987 Money Magazine article that listed Flint as the nation's worst place to live. There have
been other less-than-flattering lists over the years that rank Flint one of the worst cities in America in a variety of
categories.

Here's something for which people in the Vehicle City can be proud: A national walking magazine has named Flint
the best city for walkers in the nation and the Crim Festival of Races as the most walker-friendly event.

WALK! Magazine, based in Columbus, Ohio, made the selections based on nominations submitted by its readers.
Flint was listed on more than one-third of nominations for the best city and the Crim on 90 percent of the event
nominations, according to the magazine's Web site.
