winners. In addition, there are seven age-group awards presented three-deep for both
women and men for a total of 42 awards.
The USATF certified course meanders through scenic New Albany, passing the golf
course and many beautiful homes. Water stops are every 2 miles and first aid personnel
are spread throughout the course. And results are available online within a few hours of the
close of the course.
Though not a “charity walk,” the proceeds from this event do support charities. In 2007
funds were provided to the American Heart Association to promote heart-healthy initiatives
as well as the Columbus Metropolitan Library System to increase its selection of health and
fitness materials.
In addition to plenty of freebies in the full goodie bags, in 2007 each walker also
received a short-sleeved technical shirt AND a windbreaker—all for the $25 entry fee.
This year’s race will be held Sunday, September 21. Online registration is already open.

Kingsport, Tennessee
From great trails to hosting USATF race walking events, Kingsport offers opportunities
for all types of walkers.
Kingsport has hosted the National 5K Race Walk Championships for the past 16 years
and the USATF American Way 5K Masters Race Walk Championships for the past 15. The
races typically draw race walkers from 25 different states. “Everyone loves Kingsport,” says
Bobby Baker, director of 30 USA Race Walking Championships over the last 16 years. Baker
is also the USATF Racewalk Representative for the state of Tennessee.
For those not interested in race walking, the city recently completed a 15-mile paved
walking trail called the Greenbelt. The Greenbelt is a linear park that connects residential
neighborhoods, traditional parks, schools and the downtown. It meanders along streams,
wanders through marshlands and passes historic sites and wildflower areas. “Throughout the
year people really love to walk the Greenbelt and enjoy all of the beautiful scenery along
the Historic District,” says Baker. In addition, the downtown area is very walkable with plenty
of sidewalks.
The State of Franklin Track Club supports walkers with a walking representative on its
board and features for walkers in the club publications. The club also presents a Walker of
the Year award.
Many of the local races include walking divisions including the Eastman Road Race,
which attracts about 400 walkers. The War Party 5K, Blue Plum, Apple Festival and Covered
Bridge races all have separate walking races.

       WALK! Magazine is pleased to
announce that the
New Albany Walking
Classic
has been selected the 2008 Best
Event for Walkers and the city of
Kingsport,
Tenn
., the 2008 Best City for Walkers.

New Albany Walking Classic
Since its inception in 2005, this event
was a walkers-only 10K attracting 3,000
entrants in 2007. In 2008 a half marathon
will be added.
The decision to start a race just for
walkers was based on logic, according to
race director Phil Heit. More people walk
than run, so why not a race that excluded
runners?
Last year those 3,000 athletes came
from 18 different states, 126 cities in Ohio
and two provinces in Canada. The race
attracted several elite walkers including
Olympic hopefuls Matt Boyles and Susan
Randall, as well as several other nationally
ranked walkers.
Though not a “judged” racewalk, the
event is open to all walkers, however there
are judges along the course to verify
participants do not run. Awards are
presented to the top five male and female
